We congratulate, local councillor, Jonathan McShane who recently completed the Prague marathon!
"Running for Laburnum in Prague was a great experience. It was incredibly warm, the course is pretty demanding and, as usual, I hadn't done enough training but the feeling of elation crossing the finish line made it all worthwhile. Thanks to the generosity of people who understand what a special club Laburnum is, it looks like we will have raised at least £1000 that I know will be well spent."
This the third marathon, previously Rotterdam and Rome, that he has completed on behalf of Laburnum.
All at the Club send Jonathan our sincere thanks for his effort and support.
To give you some idea:
£10 would:
- pay for child’s half-yearly Club Membership to the Youth Club
£100 would:
- buy three new buoyancy aids
- buy four new kayak paddles
- pay for one day-trip away by minibus
£1000 would:
- buy two specialist canoes (either for young people with disabilities or for use in competitions)
- fund a multi-activity residential weekend for children with disabilities
- enable us to run a lifeguard training course for the trainees on our Youth Watersports Training Course.
The two boats (a Jackson Fun2 and a Dagger Juice) that CHUG (Canals in Hackney Users Group) donated.
HOW ABOUT BECOMING A COMPANY MEMBER?
You could of course go one step further and become a Company Member on our register with Companies House. We are required to keep a minimum of fifty names. You fill out a simple form agreeing to the objects of the organisation, pay £10 per year (minimum) and then hopefully get along to the AGM in December and elect the Management Committee for the coming year.
You would be fulfilling a valuable service and it is reasonably painless.

The Laburnum Boat Club is a community-based watersports centre on the Regents Canal in South Hackney, set up over twenty years ago by local parents. Aimed at young people and their families the Club runs a range of services and projects throughout the year. The main activities are canoeing, narrowboating and trips away.
The Club is a Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee, it is funded from a range of sources including individuals, charitable trusts, regeneration programmes and the local authority.
