- Youth Watersports Training

This 'free to attend' project offers older members the opportunity to train with us to become canoe instructors, dinghy sailing instructors and narrowboat skippers etc., with a view to getting employment in watersports or a related field. It is part-time and modular and we encourage the trainees to pursue their academic careers. We provide all the training, equipment and advice. There were three large expeditions this year. Trips to Europe and Scotland gave the trainees experience of advanced white water river running and leadership skills, and one with the Sail Training Association to experience some offshore sailing disciplines.

All the qualifications offered are governing-body awards, i.e. British Canoe Union, RYA etc. The trainees are also offered courses in First aid, Life saving, Powerboat handling, dragon-boat helms etc. They are also found placements with other centres. The course has proved successful and popular and we plan to make the project a permanent feature of our service.
The skills learnt are transferable to the play and youth service, the outdoor pursuits industry, and of course can be used all over the world.
